The treatise presents a portrayal of the Romantic desire phenomenon (Sehnsucht) – of a longing aimed at an object perceived as distant, veiled, hidden or unreachable. This experience connected with both joy and sadness is thoroughly described and a spectrum of attitudes towards it – from appreciating to highly critical – is delineated. A special attention is paid to the issue of different possible, often conflicting, assessments of Sehnsucht within the realm of Christian thought. The study also points to practical consequences of all these particular answers to the question of proper relationship between the infinite longing and a finite world, between the intimations of a distant fulfilment and the everyday life.
